Kenya Does Not Need a Nuclear Time Bomb

The Nuclear Power & Energy Agency, a Japanese company has set its sights on a small town in Kenya's coast called Kilifi. They intend to build a nuclear power plant to presumably increase electricity generation into the national grid by 30%.

However, this is an ill-advised idea with a limited understanding of the consequences:

  • Creation of nuclear waste that can remain radioactive and dangerous to human health for thousands of years.
  • Nuclear energy is unclean, non-renewable and expensive.
  • Nuclear energy destroys biodiversity and marine ecosystem on the Kenyan coast leading to loss of livelihoods.
  • The construction of nuclear power plants displaces thousands of local communities and deepens their vulnerability.
  • The management of nuclear power plants requires advanced skills and technology which does not exist in the country.

Why is this important?

The catastrophic risks of nuclear power in Kenya are unbearable and exacerbate the climate crisis.

We are therefore calling on you to stand with local communities.

We demand that the CS of Energy & Petroleum immediately stop the construction of this nuclear power plant in Kilifi and instead invest in renewable energy in Kenya.

Sign this petition now to unite your voice with the affected communities.
