Pledge to save water for World Water Day 2019
This World Water Day, we as individuals, are pledging to make small sustainable changes in our daily lives to conserve our precious resource.
When you save water, you are saving Earth and our environment; you are saving those species that survive in water.
When you save water, you are saving energy. Water treatment plants consume energy and households use energy to heat water.
When you save water, you save your own money.
Please sign this pledge and if possible, make a short video of yourself taking your personal water-saving pledge. Your introduction will be, "Hi, my name is _______ and in my effort to preserve water this World Water Day, I pledge to _______." Post your videos on social media with the hashtags #WorldWaterDay and #GreenpeaceAfrica so that we can find you. Other important tags you can use are #SaveWater, #NoWaterNoLife, NoWaterNoFuture and #WaterIsALifeline.
Some water-saving tips are included below to help you with your pledge. You can pick one of the following or come up with your own:
1. Don’t let the water run while shaving or brushing your teeth.
2. Drink from a bottle instead of a new glass every time to save water whilst washing dishes.
3. Sweep your patio, balcony or driveway - they do not always need a hose for cleaning.
4. Place your plants in spots where they can take in rain water.
5. If you have fish tank, this water is particularly useful for your plants, do not drain it away.
6. Let your dishwasher and washing machine fill up before using them.
7. Do not over water your plants.
8. Always inspect all your taps for leaks.
9. Make sure your sprinklers water your own lawn, not the surrounding areas, the pathways, gates, your house or your car. If your sprinklers run on a routine schedule, make sure to change it on rainy days.
10. Don’t let water run while washing dishes, instead fill one sink with water and rinse with it.
11. Don’t take long showers and use a low-flow showerhead.
12. Flush the toilet only when necessary.
13. Soak pots and pans before washing.
14. Reuse towels multiple times.
15. Water your garden before 06:00 or after 18:00.
16. When you give your pet fresh water, don’t throw the old water down the drain. Use it to water your trees or shrubs.
17. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running from the tap.
18. Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.
19. If you accidentally drop ice cubes, don’t throw then in the sink. Drop then in a house plant instead.
20. When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load.
21. Washing dark clothes in cold water saves water and energy, and helps your clothes retain their colour.
22. Use a hose nozzle or turn off the water while you wash your car. You’ll save up to 100 gallons every time.
23. Wash your pets outdoors, in an area of your lawn that needs water.
24. Upgrade to air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.
25. Include a water-saving tip in your employee newsletter.
